Some cancer patients in California face thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs for their orally administered anti-cancer medication – significantly higher than their fellow survivors who receive traditional chemo administered through an IV. This extra burden has forced many to make incredibly difficult choices, about their treatment and their budget.
The California Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® believe that treatment decisions should be made between patient and doctor based on what is medically best for the patient. However, orally administered anti-cancer medications are priced based on insurance companies’ prescription drug formularies, while a similar chemotherapy treatment that is instead administered via an IV is priced under hospital or office care guidelines. The difference can be drastic.
We’d like to change this situation so that insurance coverage is provided for oral anti-cancer medications on terms no less favorable than the coverage provided for chemotherapy via IV. During the month of June, we have an opportunity to educate lawmakers in Sacramento about this issue. If you have been impacted by this disparity, please send us your story so we can share it with state leaders – we want to ensure our voices are heard that day.
If you or anyone you know has had this experience, email Laura Farmer with the San Diego Affiliate. She can be reached at Laura@sdkomen.org. Hurry—time is of the essence! A hearing will be held in early June.
