Mary's Angels is new to the race this year. I'm a wife, mother of two beautiful boys (4 years and 18 months), and an oncology nurse. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 2, 2012, the day before my son's 4th birthday at the age of 34. Being an oncology nurse and being diagnosed with breast cancer really hit close to home, as I am usually the one treating this disease, not the one being treated. Knowing what the treatment entails first-hand was terrifying but also empowering.
I chose to be very open and public about my diagnosis with family, friends, and co-workers. I felt that if I could make just one person more aware of this disease and encourage them to be their own advocate for their health, it was worth it. I chose to participate in the Susan G. Komen race for the cure for that exact reason. This organization provides much needed funding for treatments, research, and awareness.
I am in awe of the tremendous support, love, and prayers that my family and friends have shown myself and my family over the past few months. Many people have told me that they admire my strength and courage, yet it is due to these wonderful people that I am able to stay strong and fight this disease.
Our team is participating in this race to honor those we have lost, those who have fought and won the battle, those currently fighting, and those who will hear those four horrible words "you have breast cancer".
Thank you teammates and donors, you are truly my angels. Keep up the great work!
