The New Voices of the Sacramento Valley Affiliate

The Sacramento Valley Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation held its first ever Speakers' Bureau Training on Saturday, July 16th, at the Sutter Cancer Center in Sacramento.

Five volunteers attended the day-long training event conducted by Komen Foundation volunteers, staff and members of Toastmasters (Arlene Holt, Kathy Lyon, Brenda Roper, Arne Sampe, and Marty Taub.)

In the morning session, Komen volunteers presented information on the Komen Foundation, both nationally and locally, the Komen Race for the CureĀ®, breast cancer & breast health. In the afternoon the Toastmasters gave tips on how to change a presentation based on the audience. Each participant practiced giving a short presentation in front of a video camera, and then watched the video to see how they look when speaking.

As the first to complete the Speakers' Bureau training, Jane Grossman, Gerry Paris, Juanita Valdez, Deborah Viney and Aleia Woodland will be representing the Sacramento Valley Affiliate at a variety of speaking engagements.

The Affiliate receives many calls from local organizations requesting a speaker to present information on breast health and breast cancer. Currently, the Affiliate does not have enough trained speakers to meet the need.

People of all ages, background, and experience can serve as speakers. Breast cancer affects men and women, children and adults, so we would like a speaker base that mirrors the impact of this disease. If you are passionate about spreading breast health awareness and think you might enjoy speaking in public, please consider signing up for a future training event.

The Affiliate plans on offering Speakers Bureau Training events at least twice a year. Check our Web site and your email box for an announcement about our next event.

Thank you to the Komen volunteers and members of Toastmasters for helping us present this valuable training event. And thank you to our new speakers for their dedication and willingness to lend their time and their voices to the fight against breast cancer.

About Komen: Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. About the Affiliate: Led by more than 100,000 survivors and activists, Komen is the world' largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. We are local activists in 124 cities and communities, mobilizing more than one million friends and neighbors every year through events like the Komen Race for the Cure Series, the world's largest and most successful awareness and fundraising event for breast cancer. We are advocates at the local, state and federal level, fighting for the screening and treatment programs that save lives and the research that brings us closer to the cure.
