Cows for the Cure -- Local Quilters Raise Funds and Awareness
In April this year, Marilyn Nelson, Owner of "R. Lily Stem Quilts" in Modesto, and Cathie Hoover employed their love of quilting in the fight against breast cancer by sponsoring a local quilting contest: MOO-desto COWS FOR A CURE.
To participate, quilters paid $5 for a specially designed quilt block pattern, which could be created and submitted for judging. Cathie Hoover, who designed the pattern, judged the entries. The winner was announced at a special ice cream social. The blocks were gathered into quilts and auctioned off. All proceeds went to the Sacramento Valley Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The contest officially ended in May, but customers continue to ask for the cow pattern, designed by Cathie Hoover. The women will continue to receive donations until they run out of patterns. To date, the quilt contest has raised $1,006.
Marilyn said in one of her letters to the Affiliate, "We are pleased to be able to combine quilting with this very important fight against breast cancer."
Thank you to Marilyn, Cathie, and the contest participants for sharing your talents and passion for quilting with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We think you are MOO-velous!
