On August 12, 2005 Sacramento Valley Affiliate representatives Ranjit Dhaliwal and Gerry Paris met with Congressman Dan Lungren to discuss the work of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at the national and local level as well as critical issues in the fight against breast cancer.
The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) helps low-income, uninsured, and underserved women gain access to a life-saving screening program for early detection of breast cancer. Through the NBCCEDP, many women who cannot afford mammograms are getting them, and thousands of lives are being saved.
Another issue discussed was the education and training of nurses. Our nation currently faces a critical shortage of qualified nurses and inadequate nursing school faculty to train the next generation of nurses. The Nurse Reinvestment Act continues to make progress in addressing our nation's nursing workforce shortage, and to educate and train additional nurses for the future.
The last issue discussed was the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities which is working closely with the National Cancer Institute to enhance research on women who have never undergone screening and identify barriers to screening, including cultural and economic barriers.
The Komen Sacramento Valley Affiliate encourages those in our community to join in the fight against breast cancer by visiting America's town hall on breast cancer at www.ActNowEndBreastCancer.org . The Web site is a virtual advocacy forum offering every American an opportunity to educate policymakers on breast cancer issues. The site also provides information about the Komen Champions for the Cure" program, as well the Komen Foundation's public policy initiatives, priorities and positions on breast cancer legislation.

About Komen:
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
