Ironman Triathlete Lynn Keane Raises Money to Fight Breast Cancer
The Hawaii Ironman Triathlon takes place on the big Island of Hawaii the second Saturday of every October. Competitors in this World Championship of Triathlon have 17 hours to finish a 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run. Lynn Keane has participated in the race several times in the past, but this year was different. In addition to facing the personal challenges presented by the task, Lynn ran to win the Janus Charity Challenge.
Through the Janus Charity Challenge, Ironman athletes are able to raise money for the charity of their choice. The Ironman athlete who raises the most funds wins the challenge and Janus makes an additional $10,000 contribution to their charity.
Lynn chose the Sacramento Valley Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as her charity.
Lynn performed extremely well in the 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run this past October, winning first place in her division! Although she did not win the Janus Challenge, Lynn raised almost $14,000 for our affiliate and has encouraged her friends and fans to continue making contributions.
The fight against breast cancer is a cause close to Lynne's heart. When she was sixteen, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. And in the past two years, her sister Lori, her husbands sister, Rosita, and her close friend and former next door neighbor, Anne have all been stricken with life threatening forms of breast cancer. All three are mothers with young children.
Lynne says on her Website, "As you can see, this disease has touched too many loved ones close to me. Everyone has a mother, wife, sister, or daughter, so I know I am not alone in my concern. I want to fight back. Alone, my impact will be small. However, with your help, we can make a difference and help these women win their race for their own lives."
The Sacramento Affiliate has nominated Lynn to be a 2006 Yoplait Champion, honoring ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their local communities to help in the fight against breast cancer. We are proud of her success in the Ironman; we are impressed with her performance in the Janus Challenge; but it's Lynn's enthusiasm and generosity of spirit make her a true champion in our eyes.
