The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Awards More Than $45 Million to Breast Cancer Research
DALLAS -- September 7, 2005 -- The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation today announced the awarding of 202 research grants totaling more than $45.1 million as part of its Award and Research Grant Program. The amount of research grants funded this year represents a 40 percent increase over last year's research grants funding of just over $32.2 million.

The Komen Foundation's funding milestone means that critical investigative inroads can be made into the most important questions about breast cancer. The Foundation awards grants in the United States and abroad that investigate how breast cancer and normal cells function (cell biology), the causes of breast cancer (etiology), risk reduction measures, early detection strategies, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, scientific model systems and cancer control.
The impact of Komen Affiliates
"The ability to make our largest research investment to date is directly attributable to the successful efforts of our more than 100 Komen Affiliates across the country," said Rebecca Garcia, Ph.D., vice president of health sciences for the Komen Foundation. "They are instrumental in raising the money needed to fund research addressing the 'here and now' breast health needs of specific population groups, such as ethnic minorities or the medically underserved, as well as research that provides hope for the future."
The Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program is funded by at least 25 percent of all funds raised by Komen Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure® events across the country, as well as by private and corporate donations. In awarding research grants, the Komen Foundation adheres to a blind, peer-review process that is recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
The Komen Foundation and innovative breast cancer research
The Komen Foundation supports innovative breast cancer research at leading institutions throughout the United States and around the world. Since its inception in 1982, the Foundation has awarded more than 1,000 breast cancer research grants totaling approximately $190 million. The Foundation invests in cutting-edge research that might not be funded elsewhere and remains the world's largest private source of funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
Grants awarded in two categories
Komen Foundation research grants are awarded in two categories: basic, clinical and translational grants of up to $250,000 over two or three years and post-doctoral training grants of up to $45,000 for three years.
"The Komen Foundation's research grants reflect the value the Foundation places on nurturing the careers of talented young researchers through the awarding of post-doctoral training grants," Garcia added. "We appreciate the care taken by our scientific review team and lay advocates in guiding us to allocate money to the research projects with the greatest potential to impact the fight against breast cancer."
