California Lobby Day Scheduled in Sacramento

Finally! California Lobby Day is happening here in Sacramento!

On January 24th, 2006 representatives from the Sacramento Valley Affiliate, San Francisco Komen Affiliate, Central Valley Affiliate, Los Angeles Affiliate and Inland Empire Affiliate will participate in California Lobby Day at the Sacramento State Capital.

Participants will meet state legislators to educate them on the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's mission and activities. They will also discuss important breast cancer and breast health public policy issues, such as the "Every Woman Counts" campaign, and a potential program to provide breast exams for uninsured women under the age of 40.

Lobbyists will gather at 8 am for a two-hour workshop with Sean Tenner (part of the national public policy consulting group) who will coach and guide them through the day's activities. Then, from 10 am to 4 pm, representatives meet with legislators at the capital.

Each affiliate will schedule meetings with representatives from their service area. And the affiliates will work together to meet with members of strategic committees

California Lobby Day is a Komen Champions for the Cure" event. Komen Champions for the Cure" is a structured grassroots program designed to educate Congress, the President and other policy-makers about breast cancer through community involvement. In order to achieve our mission of eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment, the Komen Foundation believes that scientific progress must be complemented by sound public policy.

About Komen: Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. We are advocates at the local, state and federal level, fighting for the screening and treatment programs that save lives and the research that brings us closer to the cure.
