Quilt to be raffled at the Race.
Donna Bushard began quilting when she was 18 years old, inspired by the beautiful work of her older sister, Violet. Through the years, Donna and Violet, along with their Mother, Irene, spent many hours quilting and comparing notes, which not only improved their quilting skills but also made their pastime that much more fun! In the mid-1990's, Donna, Violet and Irene each entered quilts in the Fresno County Fair, taking first, second and third places.
On November 2, 1998, Violet passed away after a battle with metastatic breast cancer. Several years earlier she had undergone surgery and chemotherapy, treatment her family thought had eliminated the cancer from her body. Unfortunately, the cancer returned as a metastasis to her liver, and this time the treatments were ineffective.
In remembrance of her sister, Donna created a quilt, made of Race for the Cure t-shirts, gathered over the years by her daughter, Kim. Violet was a gem, a true gift to this world, and her family misses her terribly. The quilt is a hope-filled tribute to her, and to and all those who have lost their lives to breast cancer.
Donna has donated this beautiful, hand-stitched work of art (and love) to the Sacramento Valley Affiliate. It will be on display at all pre-Race events, starting January 24th. On Race day, the Affiliate will raffle the quilt to raise money for the breast cancer research.
