First Annual Lobby Day a Great Success

Komen Lobbyists at 2006 California Lobby DayOn Tuesday, January 24, eight representatives from California Affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation met with key state legislators to talk about the importance of breast health and encourage them to support programs that provide breast cancer education, screening, and treatment access to their constituents.

The day began with a training session led by Katie McKensie, who provided talking points about the California Breast Cancer Research Program, and Donna Brownsey from Sacramento Advocates, who gave participants tips on successful lobbying. The session even included a practice meeting with role play. After training the new Komen lobbyists went to work, meeting with legislators from their respective service areas until 5pm. After a long day of meetings, lobbyists headed over to the Sacramento Valley Affiliate's Paint the Town Pink Event.

Lobbyists at Paint the Town Pink Event Three out of the seven California affiliates were able to send representatives to the event. Maria Sousa, Connie Norton, and Liz Wallerstein came from the San Francisco Bay Area Affiliate. Eleanor Beasley and Cynthia Chambers represented the Los Angeles Affiliate. The Sacramento Valley Affiliate was represented by volunteers Mary Pere and Gerry Paris. The affiliate's Public Policy Coordinator, Ranjit Dhaliwal ran "base camp" for the day.

The event brought to fruition several months of planning, and organizers are pleased with the results. Lobbyists were granted 21 of the 25 meetings they had aimed for. The meetings provided initial contact with the legislators, and over the next few months lobbyists will follow up with the people they met with, extending the relationships into the future.

Thank you to all who participated in our first California Lobby Day. For information on how you can help with next year's event, please email us at info@sackomen.org or visit the Advocacy section of our web site.
