We Help Save Lives
We are proud to report that our 10th Annual 2006 Komen Sacramento Race for the CureĀ® was a tremendous success, raising over $2.5 million, with over 24,500 participants. Up to seventy-five percent of these net funds stay in our Sacramento Valley service area providing screening, education, and support services. As a result, Komen Sacramento offers numerous local programs and projects within our community. One such service is our free email reminders for the monthly BSE (Breast Self Exam) and annual mammogram recommended for women age 40 and up. We'd like to share the story of a lucky member of our Komen community, Michelle, 52, who, like many in the Sacramento Valley, had not only heard of Komen's Race for the CureĀ®, but each spring makes a pledge to support the Race. Today, she is grateful she signed up for our mammogram reminder service on our website.
Michelle's email reminder prompted her to schedule her annual mammogram last June. When the radiologist identified a suspicious area, Michelle told herself not to worry, but when a biopsy confirmed it was cancer, she was overwhelmed by fear. Fortunately, the emotional support Michelle desperately needed right then was just a phone call away. She was immediately in touch with Save Ourselves, one of the Sacramento Affiliate's 2006 grantee recipients. A breast cancer survivor (trained as peer counselors), answered Michelle's call for help.
Much assured with information she learned, that new treatments Komen has helped support, have raised the five-year survival rate to more than 95 percent, when cancer is confined to the breast, Michelle was scheduled for surgery. She was relieved to learn the cancer caught by her mammogram had been very early, very small and it had not spread. "I owe a lot to that email!" she says now. But, like all of us in the Komen community, she wonders and worries about the women who don't have email, and who may not know the crucial role women play in their own breast health. That's why we're here, and why we hope that you'll join Michelle in supporting our national search for a cure.
Michelle just made two gifts to Komen Sacramento one in memory of an aunt she lost to breast cancer, and one in gratitude for our help during her own journey. In this holiday season, please remember or honor a loved one with a special gift in any amount to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Sacramento Valley Affiliate. Your generous gift will go far to provide local breast cancer education, screening and patient services, and help us continue to...help save lives.
