Q: Where does your money go?

A: This is a very good question to ask when you are giving to a non-profit organization. The answer should be more specific than "to breast cancer research" or "to fight breast cancer". Our Sacramento Affiliate could not be more proud to answer that question. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is extremely careful how we spend the dollars you entrust in our care. As part of this responsibility, we kept administrative expenses at less than 10 percent last year. Mission-related activities, including grants and programs related to breast cancer research (22%), education (36%), screening (11%) and treatment (6%), accounted for more than 74 percent of total spending, or $96 million. (The remaining 25% were dollars spent for fundraising - 16% - and administration - 9%.) Eighty-two cents of every dollar raised is available to fund mission programs and services.

As evidence of our fiscal responsibility, Worth magazine named the Komen Foundation one of "America's Best 100 Charities" out of more than 819,000 charities in the United States in 2001. Of the 26 health organizations named to the "100 Best" list, the Komen Foundation was one of only two organizations solely focused on women's health.

Where our money goes: locally
Up to seventy-five percent of the net funds stay in our Sacramento Valley service area providing screening, education, and support services. At least 25% goes to supports the Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program. No local funds go to support the administrative and fundraising expenses of the National Foundation. Our administrative expenses were 22.6% in 2005, leaving 77.4 cents of every dollar going to the cause. This is well below the national standard of 35% as acceptable administrative expenses.

Based on information gleaned from our Community Profile (needs assessment), we grant money to other non-profits, educational institutions, hospitals, local government agencies and Indian tribes. Instead of replicating infra-structures that already exist, we grant money to organizations that run programs or initiate new programs to work toward fulfilling the identified needs of our community via the community profile. Since 1997 we have granted out more than $5.7 million to grantees in the Sacramento Valley.
