Funding Priorities

Executive Summary

The Sacramento Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® was formed in 1997 and currenlty serves 19 counties. Over the 15 years of its existence, the Komen Sacramento Valley Affiliate has invested close to $15 million in support to community based organizations in its service area for breast cancer education, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and support services. The Affiliate will award more than $1 million additional grant funding this year. The mission of the Komen Sacramento Valley Affiliate is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and by energizing science to find the cures. To guide this mission, the Affiliate conducts a community assessment every two years to better understand the state of breast health and breast cancer care services within their service area. These assessments are designed to critically measure progress against breast cancer in the region while also assessing the performance and opportunities for the Affiliate in its regional programming.

Brief Summary of Priorities

The Community Profile helps guide our work and establishes goals for granting priorities, education needs, public policy efforts, and strategic operations. This community profile identifies service gaps, barriers, and community needs and ensures that our local investments will be effective and impactful.

1. Expand Support for programs that provide breast cancer screening and diagnostic services for the uninsured.

2. Support education and outreach efforts to increase awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection and treatment.

3. Increase awareness of breast cancer programs and services available in the Affiliate service area, including the availability of Cancer Detection Program: Every Women's Counts (CDP: EWC).

4. Increase access to breast health education, screening and treatment in rural areas.

Applications will be accepted for all breast health and breast cancer projects. However, projects that specifically address these four funding priorities with innovative and evidence-based strategies will be given priority.
